Hygiene & Home Care

The importance of oral hygiene cannot be overstated, as this is the core from which all other aspects of dental health stem. While our team works hard in the office to secure the wellness of your child’s teeth and gums, it’s equally important that these practices be carried out at home daily. Your home is where your child will learn the necessary habits and techniques to keep their smile healthy and sparkling.

During appointments, our hygienists will show you and your child the proper ways to brush and floss. We will also offer tips on what kind of products to use at home, and how to make oral care a fun and enjoyable experience for the whole family. Overall, our goal is to prepare both parents and children for what happens outside the dentist’s office. A few of our favorite home care tips are as follows:

  • Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and floss once daily.
  • Replace toothbrushes every three or four months, or sooner if they become frayed.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as well as sticky foods that can cling to teeth and cause decay.
  • Visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Dental Checkups

It is important to take your child for regular dental checkups to ensure their teeth and gums are healthy. At Kinder Pediatric Dental, we recommend that children come in for a checkup at least twice a year. However, some children may need to come in more often depending on their individual needs.

Dental checkups are important because they allow us to catch any problems early and provide treatment to prevent further damage. They also allow us to teach children about proper oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing. Regular dental checkups are an important part of maintaining good oral health for children of all ages.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that can be used to repair chipped or cracked teeth. It can also be used to close gaps between teeth or to change the shape of teeth. Composite bonding is a quick and easy way to improve the appearance of your child’s smile.

The composite bonding procedure involves the placement of a tooth-colored resin material on the surface of the tooth. The material is then hardened with a special light. Composite bonding can be completed in one office visit and does not require anesthesia.

Fillings

Fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay. The most popular type of filling we offer is made from a material called composite resin, which is a tooth-colored material that can be matched to the color of your child’s natural teeth.

Fillings are placed in the cavity left behind by the decay and then hardened with a special light. The filling material bonds to the tooth, restoring it to its original shape and function. Fillings can be completed in just one office visit.

Pulpotomy

A pulpotomy is a dental procedure used to treat a tooth that has been critically damaged by decay. While most cavities can be treated with a filling, if decay reaches the interior chamber of the tooth before treatment, a pulpotomy may be necessary.

A pulpotomy involves the removal of the infected pulp tissue inside the tooth. The pulp is the tissue that contains the blood vessels and nerves. Once the pulp is removed, the interior chamber of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Pulpotomy procedures are quite similar to root canals but are typically used to treat primary teeth rather than adult teeth. Rather than cleaning out the entire root canal, a pulpotomy only removes the infected tissue in the chamber of the tooth crown. This helps to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

Infant Dental Care

At Kinder Pediatric Dental, we recommend that parents bring their infants in for the first visit by their first birthday. This initial visit is important to help us get to know your child and answer any questions you may have about their dental care.

During the first appointment, we will carefully examine your child’s teeth and gums. We will also assess their risk for cavities and discuss how to best care for their teeth and gums at home.

  • Before the first teeth appear, oral hygiene at home will involve carefully wiping the gum tissue with a clean, moist cloth.
  • When the teeth erupt, parents should purchase a special toothbrush designed for infants. This helps get them used to the idea of brushing their teeth and making the process more enjoyable.

It is important to start dental care early to help ensure that your child’s teeth and gums remain healthy. If you have any questions about infant dental care, we welcome you to contact our office. We are here to help you give your child the best possible start in life.
